How do I find a specific book in the library with the OneSearch Library Catalog tab?

If you already know the title of the book you want, use Advanced Search and type the title in the second search box (across from the word Title).

Let's try it. Click on the Advanced Search link (to the right of the search box on the Simple Search page), and clear any text that appears in search boxes on the Advanced Search page.

Now enter the following into the Title search box (the second row), making sure the Title option is selected from the drop-down menu:

(Note that we omit the initial word "the" from our search; OneSearch ignores such words when performing searches).

Click the Search button to see your results.

How many results did you get?

Is my book available to check out?

If a book is available (not checked out), you’ll see a green circle and a call number in parentheses. Use the call number to find the book in the library. For more information on how to use call numbers, see the Locating Items in the Library Guide or ask a librarian. If a book is checked out, the circle will be gray. To request a book that's checked out, you would go to the Find in Library / Request link. If not signed in with your Brandeis ID, you would see the link "Sign-in to request item." You would click that link to see a list of options for requesting the item.

Using your results list

Your results list displays all the items that match your search. For each item, the following information displays:

  • Resource Type – the format of the item — book, article, journal etc.
  • Title – Click the title to view the item’s information
  • Author/creator and date – the item’s author or creator and publication date
  • Star icon – Click the Star icon next to the title to add or remove the item from My Items. A highlighted star indicates that you have already added it to your My Items folder.

What does "Multiple Versions Found" mean?

Similar items may show up grouped together as one result with the phrase Multiple versions found. Grouped results include books with multiple editions, books with multiple translations, and film adaptations of books.

When you see multiple versions of an item, click on the title or the View versions link (on the right) to view all the versions of the item.

For example, you can see multiple versions of the book Trauma and Recovery if you run your trauma* search again.

and then type the following into the Library Catalog search box:

One of the first results should be Trauma and Recovery. If you wanted to see both versions (two editions of the same print book), you would click the View 2 versions link on the right.

To get back to your original list of results, you would then click the "x" next to "List of Versions" in the box above the results list.

Using OneSearch links

To see more information on an item, you can select any of the following links:

  • View It
  • Find in Library / Request
  • Details
  • Reviews & Tags

View It

To display the content of items that are available online, click on the View It link.

For example, if you click the View It link for the first record in your trauma* search, Journal of Traumatic Stress, you will see a list of database links. If you wanted to look at this journal online, you could click any of those links to view the issues published between the date ranges specified. Each database provides a journal page that allows you to browse all the issues published during the date range for which it offers access.

In addition to online journals, Library Catalog items that can be viewed online include ebooks, audio tracks, and government documents.

Find in Library / Request

For physical materials, you can click on the Find in Library / Request link to find out where an item is located in the library, or to request an item that is currently checked out (see previous section for instructions on requesting items that are checked out).

To see how to use the Find in Library / Request link, try running your stress OR anxiety search again and choose a physical item from the list of results.

in the Library Catalog search box. Now click the Find in Library / Request link for the print journal Stress and Anxiety.

What do you see?

Details

The Details link displays additional item information, including subject classifications and publication information. You’ll also see links to WorldCat and other online sources.

Try clicking on the Details link for individual items listed among your stress OR anxiety search results to see what's there. Note the Subjects links -- you could click on these to find more materials classified under these subjects (the most popular Subject links from a search also display under Subject in the space to the left of your search results). Note also that some records include a summary and/or table of contents.

You can use the Actions menu on the right of the Details tab view (you may need to scroll horizontally to see it) to print or e-mail an item or send it to a citation management program (EndNote, Zotero, etc.). Clicking on a citation manager link opens up a new window which prompts you to sign in to view the newly imported OneSearch item record.

Note: If you are using the stand-alone EndNote software (the program stored on your computer, not cloud-based EndNote Web) or Zotero, choose the last option from the Actions menu (simply called EndNote). This exports an RIS file to your computer’s Downloads folder.

You can also use the Actions menu to add a record to My Items, generate a citation, or view the permalink (permanent URL) for the item.

Reviews & Tags

OneSearch Reviews & Tags example

The Reviews & Tags link enables you to add, delete, and update reviews and tags for an item.

To view links to the items that have been tagged in the Library Catalog, click the Tags link on the upper right corner of the OneSearch page.
